MWAZACO Launches in Zambia to Strengthen Sustainable Mine Water Governance

In 2025, the MWAZACO project formally entered its implementation phase in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province, launching a multi-year initiative aimed at improving the management and future use of mine-affected water. Supported by the Czech Development Agency, the project brings together academic institutions, government authorities and environmental experts to address long-standing challenges linked to mining activity in the region.

The official launch meeting took place at Copperbelt University (CBU), where representatives from the Mines Safety Department (MSD), the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), the Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA), Czech development representatives, and project partners gathered to define the framework for cooperation.

Establishing a Strong Governance Framework

Rather than focusing immediately on technical interventions, the first step was institutional. During the launch, the project formally established its Advisory Board and Decision Board, two governance bodies responsible for strategic oversight, coordination and expert supervision throughout the project lifecycle.

Statutes defining the composition, roles and decision-making procedures of these bodies were approved. This created a formal and transparent governance structure aligned with donor expectations and national institutional priorities.

The launch meeting served as a platform for strategic alignment. Project objectives, timelines, and institutional roles were clarified, and comments on grant conditions and expert recommendations were discussed to ensure a shared understanding among partners.

Why This Matters

In regions where environmental management intersects with mining operations, institutional trust and coordination are essential. By establishing a formal governance structure at the outset, MWAZACO created the institutional stability required for long-term technical and environmental progress.

With governance bodies operational and cooperation confirmed, the project is now positioned to move from planning into analytical and field-based phases in 2026.

The MWAZACO project is supported by the Czech Development Agency within the Czech Development Cooperation programme. Stay connected and follow our progress as we strengthen sustainable water management in Zambia.
