One prominent example highlighted in the 2025 assessment is the Konkola Copper Mine near Chililabombwe, one of the world’s deepest active mines.

Ongoing dewatering operations at depths of approximately 1,400 meters below ground require pumping volumes of approximately 5 cubic meters per second. For comparison, sections of the Kafue River in the same region have estimated flows of approximately 10 cubic meters per second.

This simple hydrological comparison illustrates the scale of influence: in some areas, mine dewatering may constitute a substantial proportion of total river flow.

Why Water Quantity Matters

Such discharge volumes can have dual implications. On the one hand, they significantly alter natural hydrological regimes and may affect downstream water quality. On the other hand, they can serve as a potentially reliable water source, provided appropriate treatment technologies are implemented.

The Kafue River serves as the primary public water supply source for Kitwe, Zambia’s second-largest city, with a population approaching 680,000 inhabitants. Understanding the quantitative balance of mine water discharge is therefore not only an environmental issue, but also a matter of regional water security.

Preparing for Targeted Solutions

Due to limited access to detailed operational data during 2025, the assessment remained preliminary. However, initial observations confirmed that mine water discharge has a substantial hydrological impact across multiple tributaries within the Copperbelt.

These findings will directly inform the selection and technical design of potential pilot water treatment facilities in subsequent phases of the project.

By integrating water quantity considerations with water quality analysis, MWAZACO continues to build a comprehensive understanding of the region’s water system, an essential prerequisite for responsible intervention planning.

The MWAZACO project is supported by the Czech Development Agency within the Czech Development Cooperation programme.
