{"id":763,"date":"2026-04-20T07:19:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T07:19:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.frda.org\/?p=763"},"modified":"2026-04-20T07:20:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T07:20:12","slug":"practical-hydrogeology-workshops-strengthen-environmental-risk-assessment-capacity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.frda.org\/cs\/practical-hydrogeology-workshops-strengthen-environmental-risk-assessment-capacity\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical Hydrogeology Workshops Strengthen Environmental Risk Assessment Capacity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2025, MWAZACO launched a series of practical field workshops aimed at strengthening local expertise in hydrogeology and environmental risk assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The training targeted students and academic staff of Copperbelt University, as well as inspectors from the Mines Safety Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Theory to Field Practice<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial assessments revealed that while laboratory facilities were relatively well developed, there was limited field-based training infrastructure. The project, therefore, adopted a practical, adaptive training model focused on real-site conditions rather than classroom-only instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workshops were conducted directly at monitored locations and included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sampling of surface and groundwater<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sediment collection and handling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In-situ hydrochemical measurements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interpretation of mine water influence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussion of environmental and health risks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants gradually performed tasks independently, building confidence and technical competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adaptive Learning in Real Conditions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to varying field access and site conditions, the workshops were designed flexibly to adapt to available locations and environmental contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The training materials for future structured courses in 2026 are being developed based on these first field experiences and on previous environmental studies conducted in the Copperbelt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building Professional Confidence<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025 workshops represent the first stage of a longer-term educational component linked to the emerging Center of Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By strengthening practical risk assessment skills among local professionals and inspectors, MWAZACO contributes not only to environmental monitoring but also to improved regulatory oversight capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The MWAZACO project is supported by the Czech Development Agency within the Czech Development Cooperation programme.
